NOx is a commonly used term to describe a group of very toxic and highly reactive gases. These gases include nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
NOx affects the quality of air, soil and water through acid rain with direct negative influence on human health. These gases also play a role in increasing the greenhouse effect and escalating global warming.
The most common sources of NOx are generated from within different industrial processes, such as, power generation plants, sea vessels and marine equipment, cars and trucks. According to recent studies traditional municipal wastewater treatment plants are also contributing to it, when recovering nitrogen from the water.

NOx removal is achieved by injecting ozone into the quencher outlet. The volume of the condenser/absorber should be large enough to provide enough residence time for reactions to occur.
Ozone is relatively selective for NOx in comparison to other combustion products. The NOx is converted to water soluble substances. NO and O3 react to form NO2 and O2.
NO2 and O2 react to form N2O5 and O2. N2O5 and water react to form 2HNO3 which is readily absorbed with caustic solution.
